Cam Newton might bring a lot of skill to the New England Patriots but his confidence might be equally important to the team.

The signing of Cam Newton is exciting for New England Patriots fans. It’s a big move and shows that this year won’t be a rebuilding one.

Once Tom Brady left, things weren’t looking good. It’s hard to stay positive when losing the best quarterback in NFL history. It’s even harder when it looks like an inexperienced and unproven quarterback is going to take over the reins.

Patriots fans tried to get excited about Jarrett Stidham, but expectations were measured. No longer was it Super Bowl or bust for New England.

But everything changed when the Patriots signed Cam Newton. There was a reason to be excited again.

Newton was a former NFL MVP. He can dazzle you with his arm strength and his running ability. Newton also is experienced and is a much better option to replace Brady.

But Newton doesn’t just offer that. His personality will help New England.

The Patriots could have easily lacked confidence headed into 2020. The defense was still on top of their game but having Stidham as your starting QB doesn’t get you too excited.

Former Patriots safety Rodney Harrison spoke about how Newton gives the team a lot more confidence.

"“As a player, think about it — if I’m Devin McCourty and I just lose Tom Brady and all of a sudden in the offseason I’m like, ‘What the heck is this Jarrett Stidham gonna do? As a defense, do we really have to be the No. 1 defense in the league to win now?’” he said on Pro Football Talk. “Then all of a sudden Cam Newton signs, you’re like, ‘Holy crap. We have a legitimate chance. Like, we can win this division.’ You automatically forget about Tom Brady and you feel like you can give yourself a really legitimate chance of winning that division and getting back into the playoffs and having success.”"

With Newton as their starter, the Patriots can go far in the playoffs. They can even make it to the Super Bowl. Compared to Stidham’s Patriots, the sky is the limit for the team.

It will be interesting to see just how far they go. Expectations will still be low, but one would expect Newton to at least get the Pats to the playoffs.

2020 has the potential to be a really interesting season for New England. Their offense will look much different no matter who is the starting QB.

Newton could open things up for a lot of deep balls and some unique running plays. When healthy he is one of the most exciting players to watch in the NFL.
