It appears that Jimmy Garoppolo will be available in the offseason, but the New England Patriots should avoid the quarterback.

The New England Patriots have some tough decisions to make. They need to plan for the future and start building a contender again. That starts with having a capable quarterback. Could Jimmy Garoppolo make a return to New England?

Garoppolo is an intriguing case. He is coming off the best season of his career where he was able to lead the San Francisco 49ers all the way to the Super Bowl. As we all know they were defeated by Kansas City in the “big game.”

More from Chowder and Champions

Garoppolo threw for almost 4,000 yards last season with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Those numbers aren’t too far off from the legend he was supposed to replace, Tom Brady.

But the 2020 season hasn’t been as kind to Jimmy G. In six games he threw for just over 1,000 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.

Due to his injuries and the state of the organization, the 49ers are rumored to be shopping Garoppolo. Of course, New England’s name has popped up due to their QB situation and the fact that they drafted Garoppolo out of college.

Still, New England shouldn’t try to reunite with Garoppolo. It will do the organization more harm than good.

First, let’s talk about Garoppolo’s age. He isn’t exactly ancient, but he will soon be 30 years old. He may have a few good seasons left in him but he will start to decline sooner rather than later.

The Patriots need to get younger as a whole, but especially at quarterback. Cam Newton will be able to get the job done for a season or two, but he isn’t a long term solution.

It’s also clear that Jarrett Stidham isn’t the answer under center as well. If that was the case he would be the one starting and the Patriots wouldn’t have signed Newton.

This upcoming draft is extremely important for New England. They need to start hitting on their draft picks and getting some quality young talent. If the Patriots don’t have a quality 2021 draft they could be at the bottom of the AFC for a while.

So the Patriots need to steer clear of Garoppolo and focus on developing the talent they already have and will acquire in the draft. The time to rely on veterans and go all-in is in the past.

New England needs to focus on the future and building a quality roster that will last them a while instead of one or two seasons. Bill Belichick needs to start thinking about the big picture instead of only focusing on the season ahead or else his career will go down in flames and so will the Patriots organization.
