New England Patriots: Why Cam Newton deserves another chance
By Sam Minton
Cam Newton might not have had the best 2020 but he should still be the New England Patriots starting quarterback next season.
The New England Patriots are finishing up one of their worst seasons in recent history. They got bullied by the Buffalo Bills and Cam Newton had yet another poor performance. Some Patriots fans are fed up with Newton and want to move on, but that shouldn’t be the case.
Now there is no denying that Newton has struggled in 2020. He just hasn’t been the QB that the Patriots needed. While Newton can run the ball, his passing game was very disappointing.

Newton has missed wide-open targets and made poor throws. He hasn’t even thrown for 2,500 yards in 2020 while still tossing 10 interceptions.
On the ground is where Newton has made the difference. He has run for over 500 yards and 12 touchdowns. He has tied Steve Grogan for the most rushing touchdowns by a QB in a single season.
Newton’s athleticism has always been something that garnered attention. Even today he is still able to run over opponents on his way to the end zone.
But arguably Newton’s greatest asset has been his leadership ability. He has constantly lifted up his teammates and hasn’t been afraid to take the blame.
It’s also clear that Newton is determined and as hungry as he has ever been. His comments after the loss to Buffalo have proved so when he was asked about his interesting work schedule.
"“That’s been my schedule for 90% of the time I’ve been here, so you can kind of understand the frustration I do have when I don’t have the outcome, because I’m sacrificing so much. You’re talking to a person who hasn’t seen his kids in three months,” Newton said.“Obviously, the contract is what it is. Submitting myself to this team is something I’ve been doing since day one. Being accessible. Yeah, it’s frustrating. It makes you mad.”"
Newton is exactly the leader the Patriots need. He will get players to buy in, even though the team is unlikely to make the playoffs.
The Patriots are likely to draft a quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft. If they don’t fans will be irate.
New England isn’t usually this high up in the draft. They have the chance to select a game-changing QB. Could New England land Justin Fields or Zach Wilson? That would give everyone some much-needed hope.
Having Newton on the roster would allow him to mentor this future starting quarterback. If he is as motivated as Newton he could have quite the career.
Also, there is still reason to have hope in Newton. With a full offseason under his belt, he could perform much better. He also seems determined to win with the Patriots.
So the Patriots need to keep Newton. It’s not likely that he will command a large salary so New England could sign him for a rather cheap deal.
But more importantly, Newton seems like he will be a great mentor for whoever the Patriots decide to draft, and that will be an important factor if New England wants to become a contending team once again.
