The Boston Bruins are having an amazing season so far and fans just got even more great news. Boston announced that they are willing to sign Tuukka Rask and Jaroslav Halak to a new deal in the middle of the season.

The news was first reported by TSN’s Bob McKenzie and this is big news for the players as well as the team.

More from Chowder and Champions

Rask is one of the best goalies in the NHL, but some (incorrectly) questioned his commitment to the team after he left the bubble in 2020. The fact that the team wants to sign him in the middle of the season shows that they don’t have any worries about Rask.

The willingness to sign these guys shows that Boston wants to keep winning and aspires to bring home a Stanley Cup.

But who should Boston sign first? There is a clear answer.

Why signing Tuukka Rask should be a priority for the Boston Bruins.

You don’t need me to tell you this but Rask is an amazing goaltender. He keeps Boston in games that they have no right to win and makes saves that have you leap out of your seat.

2021 has just been another great season for Tuukka. Rask is 8-3-2 this season with a .902 save percentage and a 2.56 goals against average. With Rask playing this well, Boston is a surefire contender for a Stanley Cup.

Now Boston mentioned both Halak and Rask being signed, but Tuukka should be the priority.

While Rask is 33 years old, Halak is 36. Some goalies can play forever but it doesn’t mean that Boston has to sign him.

Also, Boston has some young goaltenders in the NHL who seem more than capable of being Rask’s backup. Dan Vladar or Jeremy Swayman deserves a shot to be his backup next season. Compared to Halak, they will probably be much cheaper.

But also without Rask, the Bruins could be in big trouble. Without him, it’s hard to see them winning the Stanley Cup.

Having a good goaltender is the key to winning the cup. A hot goaltender can take any team far in the playoffs. Also, we all know that defense wins championships.

So the Bruins need to make signing Rask a priority. If they can get him signed before the end of the regular season that would likely improve Rask’s confidence headed into the playoffs which means that Boston has even better chances of lifting the Stanley Cup.

It’s a real no brainer for both sides.
