New England Patriots 2021 NFL Draft rumors: Kellon Mond a dark horse QB option
By Sam Minton
The New England Patriots need a new quarterback. That shouldn’t be a surprising statement for fans, but saying that the team should draft Kellon Mond is. Still, it might be the best option for the Pats.
All offseason the talk in New England has been about QB’s like Trey Lance, Mac Jones, and Justin Fields. These guys would definitley be great options for the Patriots (well besides Jones), but it seems as though the Patriots will be out of luck.

Unless New England moves up significantly in the 2021 NFL Draft, they won’t get these guys. They will all likely be selected in the top 10 but could go even earlier.
The Patriots would have to tie their entire future to one of these guys if they did move up. You can’t blame them for being apprehensive about trading multiple picks and players in order to be in a position to draft a player such as Fields.
So it seems rather likely that the Patriots either stay at No.15 or do what they are known for, trading back. If that is their course of action, Kellon Mond is the perfect option for New England.
Why the New England Patriots should draft Kellon Mond in the 2021 NFL Draft
Mond’s best season came as a sophomore in 2018. He threw for 3,107 yards and 24 touchdowns. Those numbers might not seem amazing compared to the likes of Trevor Lawrence but they are still quite promising.
Last year Mond threw for over 2,200 yards and 19 touchdowns while only having three interceptions. Bill Belichick definitley will enjoy Mond’s ball security.
But Mond also has the arm to be succesfull in the NFL. He also moves well in the pocket which is important no matter what team he ends up on, but that is especially the case in New England.
Mond would be able to hit players like Nelson Agholor on those deep bombs that could transform the Patriots offense, while also utilizing Jakobi Meyers in the short to intermediate passing game.
Also, Mond is an experienced player spending four seasons at Texas A&M. He is a veteran starter which will give him a leg up on other QB prospects.
There is already some smoke between the Patriots and Mond. Josh McDaniels has been in contact with Mond since January. Some interest has to exist between the team and the player.
With Mond likely being a day two selection, it would make sense for New England to select him. They could either fix another problem on their roster with the 15th overall pick or they could trade back and gain even more assets.
So drafting Mond makes a lot of sense for the Patriots and he seems like the type of player who could find success in New England. Especially if he can study learn from Cam Newton for a year.
