When it comes to what fuels the “high motor” of New England Patriots rookie defensive end Chase Winovich, look no further than a $5 bill and a chocolate bar.

For the second consecutive week, New England Patriots rookie defensive end Chase Winovich was one of the players who stood out in a preseason victory.

In the team’s 22-17 comeback victory over the Tennessee Titans Saturday night in the Music City, the 2019 third-round pick was once again everywhere, displaying his “high motor” and determination.

Against the Titans, Winovich recorded five tackles, a sack, two tackles for a loss and two QB hits.  On one of those tackles, Winovich’s high motor was on full display as he chased down the QB on a scramble from the other side of the field.

It’s just the preseason for the rookie, but what Chase Winovich has displayed in the first two games for the New England Patriots is a player who is not going to give up on any play.  So, what has fueled this “high motor” energy the Michigan product has become known for?

Well, look no further than a $5 bill and some chocolate.

"“Ever since high school my grandmother has been promising me if I played hard and didn’t get hurt she’s been promising me $5 and a chocolate bar, either Hershey’s or Sarris Candies,” Winovich said.  “So today was just another day where I went out there and said, ‘I gotta play hard.  I need that $5 and I need the candy.”"

Obviously, Chase Winovich is earning a paycheck way more than $5, but it is the symbolism behind it that makes his unique personality even more likeable.  Although he is now a professional player (though he has yet to play his first NFL regular season game), that $5 and the chocolate bar is a reminder of how far he has come as an athlete and how he has to continue to play hard to earn his success.

In that respect, Winovich is definitely in the right situation with the right team and playing for a legendary coach in Bill Belichick who cherishes that high energy style.

To summarize this all up, the New England Patriots have not only found a player who is going to bring it off the edge on every play, they found a humble player who understands his opportunity is not promised.  He has to continue to earn it and therefore it is not in his makeup to take off any play.

"“It’s weird, I don’t know why I’m built like that.  It might be a gift and a curse,” Winovich continued.  “Sometimes when it’s extremely hot and they are just trying to run the ball away, I see the guy and in my head there is a little part of me that’s like, ‘you know what, you are probably not going to make this play, maybe this time save it for the next one when it comes to you.’ But you’ll see me just sprinting and trying to hit somebody or hit something.”"

That was on full display again Saturday night against the Titans and it will be both fun and entertaining to see it on display during the regular season.  Whether Chase Winovich racks up the stats or not, his energy and impact on the game will be noticed.

It will also earn him a whole bunch of chocolate candy bars, especially playing for the New England Patriots.
