The New England Patriots lost a lot of coaches this offseason, but it looks like one former player will be returning to Gillette Stadium this season.

The New England Patriots have a problem that they have to deal with. The team is so good that assistant coaches are always in the running to get head coaching jobs elsewhere. With that there can be a lot of turnover in the coaching staff.

This offseason has been a difficult one for the Pats. Brian Flores had an amazing first season as defensive coordinator and is now the head coach for the Miami Dolphins. Chad O’Shea, the Patriots wide receivers coach joined him.

The Patriots may still be looking for Flores’ replacement, but they are finding help for other positions. The team has signed a new linebackers coach and you have probably heard of him.

New England’s new linebackers coach is none other than Jerod Mayo.

This move makes a ton of sense. Mayo was a vocal leader during his playing days. The transition to coach shouldn’t be too difficult.

Mayo had a relatively short career. Just like Rob Gronkowski, Mayo dealt with injuries throughout his career and was forced to retire after just 8 seasons.

Still Mayo had a great career. He tallied 808 tackles, 11 sacks, 8 forced fumbles, and 3 interceptions.

A valuable mentor

Even though the New England Patriots just made it to the Super Bowl, I think it’s important that Mayo has won a Super Bowl. He can be a leader to the younger guys and show them what it takes to be the best.

The New England Patriots defense will have to step up next season. The days of Tom Brady bailing them out seem to be behind us. The whole reason the Patriots won the Super Bowl was because of their defense.

Mayo will be a valuable mentor to a guy like Ja’Whaun Bentley. Bentley looked like he was about to burst onto the scene as one of the best young linebackers in the league. Then he got injured and his season came crashing down.

Bentley will have Mayo telling him what he needs to do in order to get back to that level. Mayo will teach him everything he has learned over his career, and hopefully Bentley will come back better than ever.

Next. Thank you Rob Gronkowski. dark

So welcome back to the New England Patriots Jerod Mayo. Hopefully you will be able to add your Super Bowl ring collection.
