Boston Bruins rumors: The Marcus Johansson conundrum
By Sam Minton
Marcus Johansson has played well for the Boston Bruins, but will the team be able to afford to bring him back?
There have been plenty of surprising stars for the Boston Bruins this season. One of them wasn’t even on the team for half of the regular season. Marcus Johansson has made a name for himself so far in the postseason.
When the Bruins first traded for Johansson I was skeptical. After hearing rumors of Mark Stone, Johansson seemed like chopped liver. Well, I am glad to report that I was wrong.

Johansson was just what the team needed. He is a quality depth winger who knows how to score. This postseason, Johansson has been lighting it up.
In just 17 postseason games, Johansson has 3 goals and 6 assists. He has been strong on the puck and fit in seamlessly with Boston.
In Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals, Johansson was one of the best Bruins on the ice. From the start, he was creating good scoring opportunities and skating well. This continued in Game 2
With Johansson’s success in the playoffs, it seems like the Bruins would surely bring him back. Well, I wish it was that easy.
The Boston Bruins have a lot of important players to re-sign. Some of these guys are important pieces like Charlie McAvoy, Danton Heinen, and Brandon Carlo.
Boston’s No.1 priority should and will be McAvoy. He is the future of the Bruins defense and needs to be locked up. He could see his number in the rafters by the time his career is over.
With his performance in the postseason, Johansson is sure to get a nice payday if he hits the open market. This could price him out of the Bruins budget.
After the Bruins sign Charlie McAvoy they won’t have a lot of cap room. Re-signing Johansson will come at the cost of losing a guy like Brandon Carlo or Danton Heinen. The Bruins also have to worry about re-signing Jake DeBrusk whose contract will be up in 2 years.
The Boston Bruins have a decision to make and hopefully it will end with Marcus Johansson staying in Boston.
