The New England Patriots have some tough roster decisions to make and that might mean that longtime backup Brian Hoyer leaves the team.

As the end of the preseason approaches that can only mean one thing. The New England Patriots will have some tough decisions to make.

New England will have to trim their massive roster down to 53 players before the start of the regular season. That is something that is easier said than done.

More from Chowder and Champions

One position has made this cutdown quite difficult. New England’s wide receiver corps have quickly become the deepest position group on the team.

It appeared that Demaryius Thomas would start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but he is healthy and fully participating in practice. That is just another roster spot that is taken up.

With the deep group of receivers that the New England Patriots currently posses they will try and keep all their talent. Phillip Dorsett is a player that is on the bubble, but I think the New England Patriots will keep him.

Dorsett has a strong relationship with Josh Gordon. He was very vocal about the wide receiver during the offseason and into training camp. It looks like he would be worth the roster spot just for his off the field effect.

So if the New England Patriots are going to keep Dorsett this would likely mean they would have 6 or possibly 7 receivers. That would take up a ton of roster space.

That would mean that New England would have to open up some space by making some difficult cuts at other positions. One of those would be at QB.

Now Brian Hoyer is underappreciated. Being a backup QB isn’t as easy as it might seem. You are in charge of preparing the defense for their opponent.

But it is time for a change. It is time for the Patriots to look towards the future. Brian Hoyer will be retiring in a few seasons. He isn’t your Tom Brady replacement.

Now I’m not saying that Jarett Stidham is going to be as great as Brady, but with what he has shown so far in the preseason he looks like he could be a quality quarterback in the NFL.

N’Keal Harry will rake in catches. dark. Next

So it looks like New England Patriots fans could be seeing the last of Brian Hoyer. It is time for the team to look ahead and towards someone who could actually replace Tom Brady.
