The Boston Bruins aren’t Stanley Cup Champions
By Sam Minton
The Boston Bruins are at the top of the NHL right now, but that doesn’t mean they would be named Stanley Cup Champions if the NHL doesn’t play another game this season.
We are in the midst of some interesting times. The NHL is shut down and we don’t when there will be another game, but that doesn’t mean the Boston Bruins are Stanley Cup Champions.
Ever since the NHL season has been postponed fans have been saying that in the NHL rule book there exists such a rule that would make the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup Champions if another game isn’t played this season.

That is not the case. The last time the NHL didn’t award a Stanley Cup was in 1919 due to the Spanish Flu. Since it was during the middle of the finals, both teams’ names were etched on the Stanley Cup.
But since the start of the NHL in 1917, the league has always awarded the Stanley Cup via some sort of playoff. I don’t think that will change this season.
Also if the Bruins were named Stanley Cup Champions without finishing the season would you even want it? They might have been the best team in the NHL but opposing fans will say that they didn’t earn it.
What makes a Stanley Cup so amazing and joyful is that it represents the culmination of a seasons’ worth of hard work and effort. If you were just to be handed the trophy all of a sudden it wouldn’t feel the same.
Also, this Bruins team is so talented. They don’t deserve to have an asterisk next to their championship. They have all the makings of a Stanley Cup team.
So the Boston Bruins won’t be handed the Stanley Cup. They have to earn it and once hockey starts up I think they will.
