The NBA looks like they could be headed to a 16-seed playoff format and that would be bad news for the Boston Celtics.

We have entered the unknown. We know that sports will be back but what will they look like? The NHL announced their return to play plan and now the NBA seems like it could be close to announcing their own. One proposed idea will have Boston Celtics fans angry.

It seems that sports leagues such as the NHL and NBA feel that a situation like this deserves a unique solution. The NHL changed up the format for how they determine what teams make it into the playoffs. The NBA might do the same.

More from Chowder and Champions

Instead of the 8 seeds in each conference, the NBA is considering just doing a 16-seed and having the 16 best teams in the league make the playoffs.

If this proposed format was to pass it sure would be interesting. I can imagine the Eastern Conference wouldn’t be happy because some of their lower playoff teams would end up missing out.

The East has always been the weaker division and this format would just prove that. Thankfully Celtics fans wouldn’t have to worry.

Boston would still be in the playoffs and would face the 76ers in the 1st round. That is perfectly fine and I would imagine that the Celtics would move on.

The 2nd round is the problem. If the Boston Celtics beat Philly their gift is a 2nd round matchup with the LA Clippers. Well, that’s a wrap folks.

LA has been saving themselves for the playoffs. Paul George and Kawhi Leonard are just waiting to dominate. The Celtics might be able to beat them in one game, but I don’t know if they can do it in a series.

Now let’s say that the C’s beat the Clippers or the Mavericks upset the Clippers in the 1st round. Who would Boston face in the 3rd round? The Bucks.

Milwaukee has always caused problems for the Celtics whether it be Giannis Antetokounmpo, Malcolm Brogden (now on the Pacers), or Khris Middleton.

So if the NBA does pick a 16 seed playoff the Celtics will have a quick exit. Instead of having a chance to possibly make it to Eastern Conference finals, it seems like now they will just be lucky to make it out of the 2nd round.

This sucks because we have seen Jayson Tatum really come into his own. He is averaging 23.6 points and 7.1 rebounds a game. Tatum also snagged his first All-Star appearance.

Another important factor in Tatum’s growth is that he has become much more confident. He knows his skills and you have seen him make plays that showed he believed in himself.

So let’s see what the NBA decides to do, but a 16-seed playoff format would spell doom for the C’s.
