With numerous New England Patriots players opting out of the 2020 season, some people think that Bill Belichick is behind their decisions. That just isn’t the case.

When football fans think of New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick it almost sounds like they are talking about a mystical creature.

They call him “the hooded one” or say that he is behind all New England’s moves whether it be on or off the field. The pandemic hasn’t stopped that.

On Tuesday we saw six Patriots players opt out of the 2020 season. This includes Patrick Chung, Dont’a Hightower, and Marcus Cannon. These aren’t just members of the practice squad or guys who fans have never heard of before. They are integral pieces of the team.

Now, these moves make sense. Cannon had a bout with cancer in his rookie season, Hightower recently became a father and his mother has Type Two diabetes, and Chung has a pregnant girlfriend, a child with asthma, and his father is 75 years old.

These players are valuing the health of themselves and their family members. It’s not rocket science it is common sense. One would hope that fans would do the same thing if they were in similar situations.

But of course, everyone can’t believe logic and has to think that somehow Belichick is behind it all.

Yes, a head coach is using a pandemic to his advantage. That is definitely the reasoning behind this.

I don’t know how someone like this gets a job as an NFL executive. They seem completely incapable of realizing that players are able to make their own decisions.

Also, this is very public information. It’s not like the world is just finding out that Cannon had cancer or Hightower’s mom had diabetes.

Another important point is that this person is texting Adam Schefter. You have to know that there is a possibility he posts this. Schefter probably gave him a heads up too that he was going to post it. How did the executive not have a moment of clarity and tell Schefty to keep that between themselves?

Belichick isn’t creating some scheme to land Trevor Lawrence or to make the team better. The only thing Belichick is doing is being an understanding coach. Chung even said it himself.

"“That’s private, but he understood,” Chung said. “He understands it’s a serious pandemic going on. He totally got it. You guys think Bill is this drill sergeant, but he’s actually a very caring person. So he totally understood, and that was it. It was a short phone call.”"

Belichick isn’t this scary man focused on just winning football games. He cares about his players and making sure that they are safe.

Besides being incredibly stupid, insinuating that Belichick is behind these players opting out is just incorrect.
