The Boston Celtics signed Jayson Tatum to a five-year extension and the team is now set up for the future.

For a while, Boston Celtics fans were disappointed in the 2020 offseason. Gordon Hayward bailed on the team and Danny Ainge had failed to make a move. That all changed on Sunday night when Jayson Tatum signed a contract extension with the C’s.

Tatum won’t be leaving Boston for a while. He signed a five-year extension worth nearly $200 million. Celtics fans would say that it’s money well spent.

Boston’s 2017 draft pick has continued to grow during his time in the NBA. The 2019-20 season was a highlight of Tatum’s young career. He averaged over 20 points a game as well as seven assists.

Tatum really became a complete player. He was able to get to the free throw line as well as improved as a shooter. It’s everything you could have dreamed of as a fan of Tatum.

But just the simple fact that Tatum decided to sign a contract extension with Boston is big for the team. It changes the narrative and look of the organization.

The Celtics have seen a lot of key players abandon the franchise. Boston is able to bring in good talent but has struggled to retain it. In a short period of time, Celtics fans have seen Kyrie Irving, Al Horford, and recently Hayward leave Boston on less than stellar terms.

Now the Celtics have a young foundation with Jaylen Brown and Tatum leading the way. That is quite the dangerous duo. When you add in the fact that they still have Kemba Walker they are in safe hands.

With Brown and Tatum leading the way, Boston will be contenders for years to come. The talent that these two possess means that Celtics fans should see another banner in the rafters of TD Garden rather soon.

Tatum is so skilled that he could become a top 5 player in the NBA. He is one of the better draft picks that Boston has had in recent history. He is exactly the type of player that the Celtics should be building around.

So Tatum’s contract extension is a pivotal point in Celtics history. It ensures that Boston will be successful for many years and that they are able to retain talent. It’s good to know that Tatum will be the face of the franchise as they head into this new era of basketball.
