Gordon Hayward has had a rollercoaster of a career with the Boston Celtics but he has finally been the player that fans expected when he first joined the team. Hayward wants to win a championship in Boston and he has the talent to do so.

This season has been rather surprising for the Boston Celtics. I don’t know if fans were expecting this much success after losing Kyrie Irving and Al Horford.

But Boston has been one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference and looks poised to make a run in the playoffs. One of the reasons why is because of the play of Gordon Hayward.

More from Chowder and Champions

In a way, this season has been a pleasant surprise for Hayward. It has by far been his best season as a Celtic. Ever since Boston acquired Hayward this was what we have been waiting to see.

This season Hayward is averaging 16.8 points and 6.4 rebounds a game. He is also shooting efficiently with a 50.6 field goal percentage.

Hayward has been an integral part of this Boston Celtics squad. But he could be leaving Boston as he is a free agent at the end of the season. The Celtics could also trade Hayward to shed some cap space and get something back before his contract expires.

But it seems like Hayward wants to stay in Boston and bring an 18th banner to the TD Garden rafters.

"“I want to win a championship here … I mean, that’s what my goal is. That’s what my focus is. You know, after the season, you sit down and discuss things … But right now I’m trying to play my best basketball to help us win a title.”"

I genuinely believe that Hayward wants to win in Boston. It would prove that the Celtics made the right decision acquiring him.

The Celtics have a better chance of winning a championship with Gordon Hayward on the roster. He is a perfect complement to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. He is a great mentor for these young guys and can also pick up the slack when they are having an off night.

You need to have a deep roster in order to make it far in the playoffs. Losing Hayward would make your team much weaker overall. You would be putting a ton of pressure on guys like Tatum and Brown.

So I believe that Gordon Hayward can bring a championship to Boston. The important thing is whether Danny Ainge and the Boston Celtics believe the same thing
