Cam Newton’s election as a captain of the New England Patriots makes perfect sense as he is the leader of the offense and one of its top two players.

Cam Newton being elected a captain of the New England Patriots is no surprise to some. The star quarterback will take charge of the Patriots offense and team.

Anyone who thought that Newton was just another signing for the Patriots was well off-target. The former MVP has taken charge of the offense and as a result the very fortunes of the Patriots in 2020.

More from Chowder and Champions

Newton is a bonafide superstar. A former NFL MVP. He’s 31 years-old. He’s not just a take a chance on an older quarterback type player. The challengers to Newton were the pedestrian duo, Jarrett Stidham, and Brian Hoyer.

Newton was and is the only candidate qualified to start for New England absent any major injury issues for the former MVP. He is the club’s only chance to have an opportunity to make a run at the AFC East title and the playoffs.

The only thing that could keep Newton from taking command of the Patriots offense, and frankly the team, along with Devin McCourty and Matthew Slater, is injury.

This man is a leader and, uber-talented. How many players have been an NFL MVP?

Yet, his signing was minimized by some as just another QB to compete against Stidham and Hoyer. Newton (healthy) vs those two quarterbacks? Seriously? It was a joke.

After the revered and legendary Tom Brady was booted out of New England by the powers that be due to inattention and maltreatment, many thought that the brain trust was certain that they had a quarterback on the roster that could replace him. Stidham. That was a quarterback who had thrown a sum total of four passes in the National Football League. FOUR!

Yet, in a really incomprehensible display of actual sound reasoning by the team, the Patriots personnel operation deciphered that signing a former MVP quarterback to replace a former MVP quarterback just might make sense.

It was truly surprising that New England actually made this signing. After all, they know better than anyone else what to do. Well, didn’t they trade a second-round pick for Mohamed Sanu? That worked out quite well, indeed.

But, in this case, they finally got one right. Bully for them! Thankfully.

Yet, some observers thought that Stidham would actually beat Newton, a former MVP of the League, for the starting position on the Patriots. Right. Stidham. Four passes in the NFL. Not so fast.

So now that the Patriots enter the 2020 NFL season with a dilapidated offense whose only hope is that Newton can lead them to victories. Their wide receiver crew is terrible (other than the magnificent Julian Edelman). They have no tight ends to speak of. Their running back room is mediocre at best. At best. Likely, it is worse than that.

So they look to Newton to bail them out of their personnel management incompetence. Maybe he will. He’s certainly one of the most capable individuals who might be able to do so. Almost on his own.

One can only imagine what a competent personnel operation coupled with their acknowledged coaching acumen might have achieved. No doubt here – double-digit SB wins under the inimitable Brady, for sure.

Next. Justin Rohrwasser was a waste of a draft pick. dark

And maybe, just maybe, another one or more even more under Newton. Too bad. Realy, too bad.
