The New England Patriots need to be perfect to beat the best team in football and the odds-on favorite to repeat as Super Bowl Champions.

Sunday night the New England Patriots will face their toughest game of the season against the Kansas City Chiefs and the team needs to play a perfect game to win.

New England Patriots fans should not expect too much from the team Sunday because they’re not likely to get it. The Chiefs are an absolute juggernaut now led by their super quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.

More from Chowder and Champions

Mahomes has become the new Tom Brady, the best-of-the-best and he’s only going to get better. Get used to it.

Anyone who watched the Chiefs play the Ravens or saw highlights had to have been impressed and depressed. They were dominant against the best defense in the league led by Mahomes who is an absolute star.

Mahomes went for 31-41 and four touchdowns and 373 yards against the best defense in the NFL. Anyone who thinks a Patriot-like dynasty for Kansas City is a delusion should watch this Chiefs offense.

It’s loaded and it’s only going to get better as it evolves and barring injury, they will walk to another Super Bowl victory early next year. It’s tough for Patriots fans to accept but accept it, it is the reality of NFL football in the 2020s.

The New England defense has been what it should be, good but not great. It’s weak on the defensive line and at linebacker.

The hope is that the defense will get better as their young good players get more experience. One is clearly going to get better and better and he’s already proving it. That player is second-year Michigan product, Chase Winovich. Winovich is the Patriots best pass-rusher now and he’s likely to get even better.

Winovich’s likely explosion has been talked about already. He’s already justifying those predictions.

Two other defensive rookies realistically have an opportunity to have a major impact role. They are safety Kyle Dugger, the Patriots first pick in the second round this year, and edge player Josh Uche who’s pass-rush ability is something the Patriots could sorely use.

Those three young players are the ones who could help raise this defense to a higher level, the level it would need to beat the Chiefs. Unfortunately, Uche is still on injured reserve and he will not likely be available and that doesn’t help at all.

Mahomes has taken his game to another level if that is possible since he was the NFL MVP in 2018. He has become virtually unstoppable and he has a bevy of weapons at his disposal.

He has a great tight end like New England used to have in Travis Kelce. He has 21 catches in three games for 227 yards. New England may not get that production all season long. While that might be a slight exaggeration, it’s not much of one.

None of their tight ends catch much of anything. They are a deep hole in the offense that is hurting the team every game.

In addition, Mahomes has wide receivers in the plural. Tyreek Hill has 15 catches for 222 yards in three games and Sammy Watkins has 155 yards on 15 catches. They are the top two and they are both very, very good.

Rookie Clyde Edwards-Hellaire is the Chiefs top running back and he’s had a nice start to the season with 240 yards on 55 carries and that equates to a 4.4-yard average.  But make no mistake the key to the Chiefs and why they will likely beat New England on Sunday night is Mahomes.

Mahomes can do it all, pass, run, RPO, all of it. He’s a master of all aspects of the game and the Kansas City offense under Head Coach Andy Reid has evolved into a masterpiece of motion, deception, and just plain excellence.

They ripped the Baltimore defense, again the league’s best prior to that game to shreds. Mahomes is the best in the business now. He can throw from the pocket and he can roll out and throw on the run with equal effectiveness.

In addition, he can run the ball on a programmed run, on an RPO, or just improvise to avoid a sack on a scramble. Mahomes is just the best in the business right now and the Chiefs are as well.

After seeing the Chiefs dismantle the Ravens defense, not much is expected here from the Patriots overrated defense in Sunday night’s game. They have the potential to perhaps do the job, but the likelihood frankly is slim.

They just don’t have the quality in the defensive line or at linebacker to contain the powerhouse Chiefs quarterback and offense. The defensive backfield is the team’s greatest strength and they have not been as advertised so far.

If they show up and play to the best of their ability, they’ll have a chance. Otherwise, expect to go into the October 11 game at home against Denver 2-2. That’s not very good and Buffalo could be 4-0 by then and in the driver’s seat in the AFC East.

Next. Jarrett Stidham and his fall from grace. dark

That’s tough medicine to swallow for New England Patriots fans.
