If the New England Patriots are going to pull off an upset win against the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend, they will need more heroics from Cam Newton.

In Week 4, the New England Patriots will face their biggest test of the 2020 regular season as they will take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium.

To put the difficulty of this matchup into perspective for the Patriots, the Chiefs have a record of 31-8 with Patrick Mahomes as their starting quarterback (including playoffs.)

More from New England Patriots

If the Patriots are going to have a chance to win this game, we will need to see the same Cam Newton that threw for nearly 400 yards against the Seattle Seahawks just two weeks ago.

Newton had a bit of a down game last week against the Las Vegas Raiders, and if he starts off slow again it could mean trouble for the Patriots in this game.

While it’s not a bad thing for Cam to simply manage the game sometimes, that’s generally not how you beat a team like the Chiefs on their home turf. Newton is going to have to be more productive both through the air and on the ground.

Obviously it would be nice to control the ball and the clock with the run game in order to keep Mahomes off the field as much as possible, but the reality is that the Chiefs just faced the best rushing offense in the NFL in the Ravens and won pretty handily.

New England’s running backs will need to be involved, but they can’t be solely relied on. With James White returning to practice this week, it would not be surprising to see him and Rex Burkhead heavily involved in the passing game.

White is normally New England’s primary pass catcher out of the backfield, but Burkhead is coming off a game where he had seven receptions. The Patriots may be able to do some unique things offensively with both productive receiving backs in the fold.

We already know that Julian Edelman is going to have an impact, and hopefully N’Keal Harry and Damiere Byrd are utilized more as well. All three of those receivers will need to step up again and help their quarterback as they did against Seattle.

A lot of things need to go right in order for the Patriots to win this one, but Cam is the biggest factor. If he can keep up with Russell Wilson, it’s not completely insane to think that he can keep up with Mahomes as well.

If the Patriots manage to pull off a win somehow, it would be a huge statement to the rest of the NFL. For that to happen, they need Super Cam.
