Jaroslav Halak re-signed with the Boston Bruins and the deal is an absolute steal.

We haven’t gotten a lot of hockey news. Everything has been put on pause since the suspension of the season. Boston Bruins got some great news on Friday.

The team announced that they had re-signed Jaroslav Halak. Bruins fans will get one more season of Halak at a bargain.

More from Chowder and Champions

Halak’s deal has a cap hit of $2.25 million. That is a steal.

In his previous deal, Halak had a cap hit of $2.75 million and that was a two-year deal. He basically took a $500,000 pay cut. That is insane.

The Bruins got a starting-caliber goaltender that will continue to backup Tuukka Rask. This season was another great one for Halak. In 31 games, he had a record of 18-6-6 with a 2.39 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage.

Halak makes Tuukka Rask’s life so much easier. He isn’t forced to start as many games as other goaltenders across the NHL. This ensures that Rask is fresh and ready for the postseason.

The re-signing of Halak also ensures that Boston’s young goaltenders can continue to develop in the AHL and ECHL. Jeremy Swayman, Dan Vlader, and Kyle Keyser are the future in between the pipes. The more time they get to hone their skills in the minors the more prepared they will be for when the group eventually has to replace Halak and Rask.

Another season of Rask and Halak means another season that the Boston Bruins can compete for the Stanley Cup. Poor goaltending can kill a team’s chances of winning. Boston doesn’t have to worry about that.

Halak believes in Boston. He believes that Boston can win a Stanley Cup. Hopefully, the Bruins do not let him down. They need to continue to build a solid team around him. That’s why signing Torey Krug should be a major priority.

So it is great that Jaroslav Halak is coming back. It looks like he will spend the rest of his career in Boston.
